Glyfada is where the Athens Riviera feels most like a town. You can buy a shirt, book a table, and be on a sunbed in the same afternoon. That is also why it is the wrong choice if you came for silence. The right Glyfada stay is a house just far enough from the main avenues that the evening is yours, and close enough that you do not need a car for dinner.
Why stay in Glyfada
The marina, the golf courses and the shopping streets are the practical reasons. Guests who fly in for four or five nights do not want a forty-minute drive before they see the sea. Glyfada is the shortest serious Riviera stay from both the airport and the centre. Apartments as well as villas belong here: a sea-view flat above the lower town can be the better booking for a couple, while a pool house suits a family. Both sit under luxury villas and apartments for rent in Glyfada.
If the brief is a heated pool and not much nightlife, look at Voula as well. If it is the lake and Astir, go to Vouliagmeni.
Ano Glyfada and the seafront
Ano Glyfada is higher, leafier and generally quieter at night. The walk to the sand is a drive. The seafront and the streets behind Asteras and Balux are closer to the clubs and the traffic. We say which one a house is. "Glyfada" on its own is not a location.
The beaches most guests actually use are Asteras Glyfada and Balux, plus Voula A and Voula B a few minutes south. Entry prices and sunbed rules change every season. The current shape of them is in the Riviera beaches guide.
Eating and shopping
Glyfada restaurants are the reason many people pick this suburb over a prettier but emptier one. You can eat well without a reservation in May, and you will want one in August. Shopping is concentrated on Metaxa and Kyprou, with the usual Athenian mix of local labels and international brands. The Glyfada guide lists the streets and the kind of tables worth booking.
The Ellinikon next door
The old airport site, directly north of Glyfada, is now the Ellinikon project: parkland that is already open, and a much larger city that is still being built. It changes the northern edge of the suburb more than it changes a house in Ano Glyfada. What is actually open is covered in The Ellinikon.
From the airport
Athens International Airport to Glyfada is about 25 to 35 minutes via the Attiki Odos in normal traffic, longer on a Sunday evening in August when every flight seems to land together. We book the transfer with the villa. The street address is sent after the stay is confirmed, which matters in a suburb where the same postcode covers a noisy avenue and a quiet garden.
FAQ
Are there apartments as well as villas?
Yes. A couple that wants to walk to dinner is often better in an apartment near the centre of Glyfada than in a large villa on the hill. Say which you want when you write.
Is the beach in walking distance?
Sometimes, for houses on the lower side. Ano Glyfada is not a beach walk. The description says which it is, in minutes, not in atmosphere.
